An Israeli soldier is shot dead during clashes with Palestinian protesters in the occupied West Bank

A Palestinian woman was shot dead by Israeli troops during clashes in the northern occupied West, a medics official said Sunday, a day after an Israeli soldier was killed and three Palestinians were injured.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said the Israeli soldier, who was in his late 20s, was shot and wounded in the head by a Palestinian assailant who had tried to throw him to the ground, in an incident captured on video.

The wounded Palestinian, who has not been identified, was taken to a local hospital and died there, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

The two Palestinians, who were taken to the same hospital, were treated for wounds to their heads, he said.

The Palestinians’ families could not be immediately reached for comment.

The incident came as Israel continued its incursion into the Gaza Strip, targeting more than 1,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, in what it called an incursion that was being “condemned” by the United Nations.

Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers have accused each other of launching an escalation in the war, but they have said there is no military solution.

Israeli forces have been engaged in fighting since 2007 with Palestinian armed groups in Gaza, and they have frequently clashed with the Palestinian armed group Hamas, which controls the territory.

The Palestinians say Israeli forces are violating their sovereignty and have said they will not negotiate unless the Israeli government withdraws from the territory it controls.

Israel said last week it would suspend military operations in Gaza until the United States and other countries approved its continued blockade.

It also suspended military operations until the Palestinians in Gaza agree to the dismantling of the blockade.
